Belgian hospitality brand 1898 is to open 1898 Porter’s House in Ghent on 1 September 2026 following the restoration of a historic waterfront property in the centre of the city.

The property has been designed as a heritage townhouse and can be booked as individual rooms and suites or reserved in its entirety, accommodating up to 10 guests.
Additional services available on request will include butler service, VIP concierge arrangements and private chef experiences.
Two suites feature private terraces overlooking the city, while outdoor wellness facilities include copper bathtubs, an infrared sauna and ice showers.
The building is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, with a pale stone façade, tall arched windows, double wooden entrance doors and a stepped gable.
Ghent-based architects Vertongen worked to retain original architectural details including high ceilings, doors and fireplaces.
The interiors have been designed by Belgian interior designer Geraldine Dohogne, with the restoration undertaken in collaboration with local designers, makers and craftspeople.
Materials used throughout include marble, aged wood, linen and textured fabrics, accompanied by bespoke handwoven rugs, antique writing desks, vintage mirrors and other furnishings sourced across Belgium.
A palette of muted reds, golds, bronze and forest green has been used throughout the property, while bathrooms incorporate marble, rainfall showers and freestanding baths.
Architect Jan Van Loock also worked alongside Vertongen on the restoration and renovation, with the project focused on retaining the historic character of the building.
The property originally served as the porter’s house for the neighbouring Hotel des Postes et des Télégraphes.
The wider Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance complex was originally designed as Ghent’s main Post Office in 1898 by Belgian architect Louis Cloquet.
The former post office was subsequently restored and reopened in 2017 as boutique hotel 1898 The Post.
Guests staying at 1898 Porter’s House will also have access to food and beverage experiences at the neighbouring hotel.
1898 The Cobbler operates as a speakeasy-style cocktail bar, while The Kitchen serves breakfast, pastries and afternoon tea.
The opening will expand the 1898 hospitality brand’s presence within Ghent while adding a more private residential-style accommodation option alongside 1898 The Post.
