EDITION Hotels has made its African debut with the opening of The Cape Town EDITION, introducing the luxury hospitality brand to South Africa’s V&A Waterfront.

Located at Quay 7 overlooking Cape Town’s historic harbour and new superyacht marina, the 142-room hotel combines contemporary design, destination dining and wellness facilities, with views across Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean.

The opening marks a significant milestone in EDITION’s international expansion, adding Cape Town to a portfolio of destinations that includes London, New York, Tokyo, Lake Como and Riviera Maya.

George Fleck, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader at EDITION, said: “Cape Town has a distinctive energy shaped by extraordinary landscapes, diverse influences and an exceptional culinary scene. As one of the world’s most compelling cultural capitals, it is a natural home for EDITION. This opening marks an important milestone for the brand as we continue to grow in destinations that sit at the intersection of culture, creativity and global influence.”

The hotel occupies a prominent position within the V&A Waterfront’s Quay 7 development, connecting the city’s maritime heritage with its established cultural, retail and hospitality attractions.

Designed by architecture practice Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape Town-based architects and consultants, the property draws inspiration from the industrial character of its working harbour location.

The building incorporates more than six million hand-laid bricks, with pitched rooflines and timber detailing referencing traditional warehouse architecture.

At its centre is The Drum, a cylindrical open-air architectural feature with a spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform overlooking the harbour, Table Mountain and the surrounding waterfront.

The hotel’s 142 guestrooms and suites incorporate bespoke furniture, natural materials and design features inspired by historic travel trunks.

Locally produced furnishings include rugs created by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving, while the accommodation offering includes a 240 sq m Penthouse and a 112 sq m Harbour Suite.

African craftsmanship and contemporary art feature throughout the property, with Design Network Africa sourcing works from makers across the continent.

Cape Town gallery Southern Guild has curated a collection featuring established and emerging African artists, including Zanele Muholi, Usha Seejarim and Chuma Maweni.

Food and beverage forms a central part of the hotel’s hospitality offering, with Executive Chef Phil Carmichael overseeing the culinary programme alongside South African beverage specialist George Hunter.

Carmichael brings international experience to the property, including time at Berners Tavern at The London EDITION.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Shale, focuses on seasonal South African ingredients, working with regional farmers, fisheries, winemakers and independent producers.

Its menu includes dishes such as Saldanha Bay mussels with curry velouté, seaweed salad and braised black rice, alongside meats dry-aged in-house and a predominantly South African wine selection.

On the rooftop, EAVE provides an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar overlooking the waterfront, with a food and beverage offering designed to transition from daytime dining to evening drinks and entertainment.

The adjoining Pool Terrace offers informal dining and cocktails alongside the heated rooftop swimming pool.

At ground level, the Lobby Bar provides an informal social setting, serving coffee, light dishes and evening drinks.

The hotel’s Punch Room introduces a contemporary interpretation of the traditional punch house, drawing inspiration from historic trading routes through the Cape.

Its drinks selection includes Brandewijn, a punch combining brandy, Pinotage, rooibos, pineapple, lemon and winter spices.

Graham Wood, Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront, said: “The opening of The Cape Town EDITION is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront’s continued evolution and a strong expression of confidence in Cape Town as a globally competitive tourism and investment destination.”

The hotel also introduces an extensive wellness offering, with a spa located below sea level.

Facilities include five treatment rooms, a couples’ suite, sauna, steam room, infrared beds and recovery equipment, alongside treatments incorporating Omorovicza skincare products.

A 24-hour gym and regular wellness activities, including yoga, breathwork and sound baths, complement the rooftop swimming pool and leisure facilities.

For meetings and events, The Cape Town EDITION provides a ballroom accommodating up to 200 guests, a boardroom, two meeting studios and a private events terrace.

The hotel’s restaurants and bars also offer settings for private dining, receptions and corporate gatherings, including the rooftop Vantage event space.

Leonie Andereya, General Manager at The Cape Town EDITION, said: “We want The Cape Town EDITION to feel as relevant to a Capetonian as it does to someone visiting the city for the first time.

“Inspired by the warmth and authenticity of South African hospitality, we have created a place where locals and travellers come together through food, culture, creativity and conversation. Sophisticated but never formal, it offers a distinct lens on Cape Town and the feeling that you have discovered a side of the city, and a community within it, that you genuinely want to be part of.”

The opening establishes EDITION’s first presence on the African continent, adding a new luxury accommodation, dining and events destination to Cape Town’s established hospitality market.
