Buzzworks has opened The Bass & Barrel in North Berwick following a seven-figure transformation of the former Nether Abbey Hotel.

The pub, restaurant and 12-bedroom property on East Lothian’s coast officially opened on 20 October, introducing a new identity to the former hotel.
The Bass & Barrel has been developed as a neighbourhood pub and restaurant serving local residents and visitors seven days a week, with an offer extending from breakfast and morning coffee through to dinner and drinks.
Alongside the pub and restaurant, the property features 12 bedrooms, marking Buzzworks’ move into accommodation.
The drinks offer includes draught beers, local ales, wines, spirits and a selection of classic and signature cocktails.
The all-day food menu focuses on Scottish produce and coastal ingredients, with fresh seafood, Scotch steaks and pub dishes forming part of the offer.
The kitchen is working with suppliers including Edgefield Craft Butchers, whose owner is from North Berwick.
Menu dishes include grilled Scottish langoustines, seasonal lobster and fish and chips, alongside a four-person sharing Sunday roast.
Kenny Blair, CEO of Buzzworks, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to finally open the doors to The Bass & Barrel and welcome the North Berwick community into the new venue.
“A huge amount of work has gone into transforming the former Nether Abbey Hotel, and we’re incredibly proud to bring it into a new chapter. We wanted to create somewhere that feels like a proper local, with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where people can come together, feel at home and enjoy spending time.
“We can’t wait for everyone to come in, experience The Bass & Barrel for themselves and hopefully make it a place they’ll return to time and time again.”
The Bass & Barrel forms part of Buzzworks’ House Collection and has been designed by Jim Hamilton.
Buzzworks acquired the former Nether Abbey Hotel in late 2025, announcing plans at the time for a seven-figure redevelopment that would combine a pub and restaurant with 12 redesigned bedrooms.
The group currently operates 25 bars and restaurants across Scotland and is B Corp certified.
