Sodexo UK & Ireland’s Government & Energy business has prevented the equivalent of one million meals from being wasted since the rollout of its WasteWatch programme in 2021.
The milestone represents approximately 500,000kg of food waste prevented across more than 140 locations, including military sites, blue light services, prisons, government agencies and major energy facilities.
Sodexo said the reduction equates to more than 3,500 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided over the same period.
WasteWatch uses data to track, measure and analyse food waste, helping catering teams identify overproduction and make adjustments to purchasing, preparation and service.
During 2026 to date, Sodexo Government & Energy has reduced food waste by more than 150,000kg, surpassing its annual reduction target ahead of schedule.
More than half of its locations have recorded a 50% reduction in food waste during 2026.
The technology has also been deployed at a prison for the first time through its introduction at HMP Forest Bank.
The milestone was announced during the same week as the United Nations’ International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
It follows Sodexo UK & Ireland reporting last year that it had reduced food waste by 50.2%, reaching its target to halve food waste five years ahead of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 deadline.
