Walkden Community Pub Reopens Following £170,000 Refurbishment

August 17, 2026

The Vulcan Inn in Walkden has reopened following a £170,000 investment from licensees Jo Mullineux and Gary Ingham alongside Admiral Taverns.

The Vulcan Inn

The community pub on Worsley Road North reopened on Saturday 15 August following a refurbishment of its interior and outdoor spaces. The venue’s own website confirms its location at 94 Worsley Road North, Walkden.

Inside, the refurbishment has included improvements to the bar and games area alongside the installation of a new darts board.

Live sport remains a significant part of the pub’s offer, with 22 flatscreen televisions throughout the interior showing Sky Sports and TNT Sports.

The outdoor area has also been upgraded and can accommodate approximately 70 seated customers.

Furniture for the beer garden was handmade by licensee Gary Ingham, while two additional televisions have been installed outside to allow customers to watch live sport.

Mullineux and Ingham both have more than 20 years’ involvement with the Vulcan Inn and live locally.

Following the refurbishment, they plan to continue developing the pub as a family-friendly community venue through entertainment, sport and fundraising activities.

Mullineux said: “I’m absolutely delighted with how the refurbishment came along – it’s been a complete transformation.

“Every detail has been carefully considered to ensure that the Vulcan Inn feels fresh and exciting, while still retaining the warmth and character that makes this place so special for the community.

“We have loved every moment in the pub so far and we would like to thank everyone, from our family and friends, our customers and of course the team at Admiral Taverns, for all their ongoing support.

“We look forward to everything the future holds for this terrific community pub!”

The pub’s entertainment programme will include live music on Saturday nights, a local darts team on Mondays and a weekly Tuesday quiz.

The licensees also intend to hold regular fundraising events and community initiatives supporting local charities.

Its drinks range includes Cruzcampo, Birra Moretti and Murphy’s alongside wines and cocktails, including house creations Boozy Woozy and Vulcan Venom.

Admiral Taverns operates approximately 1,365 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales, with its wider estate comprising more than 1,350 predominantly wet-led community pubs.

The Walkden investment follows a number of recent refurbishment projects across Admiral Taverns’ estate, including the £134,000 transformation of the Drum & Monkey in Swadlincote, which reopened on 14 August.

Anthony Briggs, Business Development Manager at Admiral Taverns, said ahead of the reopening: “It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside Jo and Gary throughout this refurbishment journey.

“They had a clear vision for the pub, and seeing it take shape has been rewarding.

“We’re just finalising the last touches of the refurbishment and look forward to welcoming customers back when we reopen this weekend.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at Admiral Taverns, I wish Jo and Gary and the entire team at the Vulcan Inn the best of luck in the future.”

The Vulcan Inn is now open following the completion of the refurbishment.
