By Angela Green: Italian flavours delight at Crumbs Project Showcase.
Last week, the Crumbs Project hosted a delectable Italian Showcase Evening that left the 24 diners in attendance with smiles on their faces, impressed by the exceptional multi-course Italian meal prepared and served by the Crumbs trainees. The event allowed the talented trainees, all of whom have a range of learning disabilities, to take the spotlight and demonstrate their impressive culinary and service skills.
Under the guidance of Ursula Boardman, Head of Centre and Lee Whalley Head of Operations who had their normal roles reversed and donned whites for the evening. In contrast, the Food Production and Service trainers Jane Mosen and Helen Tate donned their front-of-house attire to provide the polished service in the dining room.
The evening’s menu was a tantalising exploration of Italian cuisine’s vibrant flavours and traditions. Diners were treated to Mushroom and Mozzarella Arancini on arrival and then individual choices for the antipasti, second piatti and desserts, finishing with handmade chocolates with coffee.
With focus and finesse, the trainees plated each dish with care, balancing flavours and presenting the courses with impressive culinary artistry. Their hard work paid off as the guests were extremely complimentary of both the beautifully presented food and the attentive service provided by Crumbs trainees.
The Italian Showcase is just one example of the invaluable learning experiences and sense of purpose that Crumbs provides for these exceptional individuals, while also providing an empowering experience that builds their confidence and self-esteem.
Neil Rippington, Chair of the Education Committee and Academician of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, a guest for the evening commented. “The trainees should be extremely proud of pulling off such an ambitious event. Their skills in the kitchen and dedication shone through.”
Alex Taylor of BaxterStorey who is now a regular in helping at these events said: “It is a real pleasure to be able to work with and support these individuals, they have joy for what they do and real talents that are often overlooked.”
Based on last night’s rave reviews, the Project’s future events will continue to be a source of enjoyment and real pride in the trainee’s skills and achievements.
