Parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday 24 March include a general debate on support for the hospitality industry throughout the covid-19 pandemic in the Chamber.
Prime Minister’s Questions will take place at 12 noon and when concluded two Backbench business debates have been scheduled. The second of which is a general debate on support for the hospitality industry.
The agenda has not been released, but ‘interestingly’ the debate was forwarded by Selaine Saxby, the Conservative MP for North Devon, and Ruth Cadbury, the Labour MP for Brentford and Isleworth.
MP mocks hospitality in North DevonInterestingly, as Selaine Saxby last October was very much against any further help for her local hospitality businesses in North Devon.
Saxby caused outrage when she was voted against providing free schools meals for children during half-term holidays.
When she was grilled on her voting by her own constituents on Facebook, including some in hospitality, Saxby then vented her anger back in the direction of the hospitality businesses questioning her actions.
She posted: “I am delighted our local businesses have bounced back so much after lockdown that they are able to give food away for free, and very much hope they will not be seeking any further government support.”
Saxby attempted to delete the post, but too late as people engaged in the row had taken screenshots of it.
North Devon Liberal Democrat, Alex White, spoke for many in the area at the time when he said: “I am stunned at what I have read from Saxby.
“Not only has she tried to justify the fact that she has voted in a way that could see children go hungry, but she’s also attacked the hospitality industry in North Devon who have taken one of the biggest beatings during this pandemic, but still step forward to support children.”
We can only hope that Selaine Saxby, the Conservative MP for North Devon has had time to reflect on her actions, and has modified her tone on hospitality, and free schools meals for children.
