MP mocks hospitality
Selaine Saxby is a Conservative MP for North Devon who voted against providing free schools meals for children during half-term holidays.
Following the vote, Saxby caused widespread consternation amongst her constituents by publicly mocking the hospitality industry.
The MP for North Devon sarcastically posted on Facebook: “I am delighted our local businesses have bounced back so much after lockdown that they are able to give food away for free, and very much hope they will not be seeking any further government support.”
The Facebook post met with enormous anger and calls for her to both apologise and resign. Saxby then deleted the post, but it was screenshotted and shared before her attempt to hide it.
Locals were both dismayed by the lack of any understanding of the issue, and insulted through their geographical association. North Devon Liberal Democrat, Alex White, spoke for many in the area when he said: “I am stunned at what I have read from Saxby.
“Not only has she tried to justify the fact that she has voted in a way that could see children go hungry, but she’s also attacked the hospitality industry in North Devon who have taken one of the biggest beatings during this pandemic, but still step forward to support children.”
The ramifications for Saxby, and potentially the reputation of the Conservative MPs who also voted against free school meal provision during holidays goes way beyond North Devon.
The Facebook post by the MP for North Devon shows contempt for school children and the hospitality industry. Its audacity is almost beyond comprehension. It pours scorn on millions of people, and that includes all of ‘us’ in hospitality.
