Colliers International has sold the Best Western Burnside Hotel situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park on behalf of the LPA receivers over the properties and joint administrators over the business, to local business, GGE Ltd. The sale price was advertised as offers in the region of £3.1 million for the hotel and associated staff accommodation.
Located in Bowness on Windermere, overlooking Lake Windermere, the hotel has 57 en suite letting bedrooms, extensive conference facilities and a separate leisure complex, all set within around 2.4 acres.
Parts of the property date back to the 1800s and are set alongside modern additions, such as the separate Parklands Country Club. The purpose built leisure complex boasts an indoor heated pool, with a children’s area and spa bath, along with a sauna and steam room. The sports facilities also include a large sports hall, squash court and a trimnasium.
Strong trading base
Julian Troup, Head of UK Hotels Agency, Colliers International commented: “There was a substantial level of interest in The Best Western Burnside Hotel from both local and national concerns. The business has a strong trading base despite being in administration, partly down to its iconic position overlooking Lake Windermere. This, coupled with the availability of staff accommodation in the town and included in the sale, made the hotel a very desirable business opportunity.”
GGE Ltd, owned by local businessman Richard Berry, has a wide variety of business interests from truck dealerships to residential home builders and commercial property rentals; but is better known locally for owning Romneys, the famous Kendal gastro pub which has recently been transformed. Mr Berry said: “The Best Western Burnside Hotel has a lot of potential and has a good level of existing trade to build on. The hotel’s location in the Lake District has masses of appeal and is bound to ensure its future success.”
The Best Western Burnside Hotel was marketed by joint agents Colliers International and GVA.
