It’s not necessarily the highest profile names that feature highest in the Sunday Times Rich List each year: after all, if it was judged on profile alone, David and Victoria Beckham would rank first, but their £210 million fortune pales in comparison to the Hinduja brothers who have replaced Arsenal FC shareholder Alisher Usmanov at the top with their joint fortune of £11.9bn.
Of course, some of those at the top of the list may well have considerable investments in the hospitality industry that are not visible, so the list could be even longer…
So who features highest from the hospitality sector?
Joe Lewis, the entrepreneur with a £500 million stake in Mitchells & Butlers in the UK, also Tavistock Restaurants in the USA, not to mention Tottenham Hotspur FC! His fortune is estimated at £3.35 billion, and earns him a ranking amongst the billionaires at 25.
Sir Henry Keswick and family, whose interests include luxury hotels (Mandarin Oriental) and restaurants. 37th with £2.4 billion
Jasminder Singh and family, Edwardian Group Hotels. £840 million, 121st
Richard Caring has assets including The Ivy and Annabel’s nightclub, and has expanded in recent years with restaurant chains Bill’s and Grillshack. His £800 million places him at 125.
Trevor Hemmings, the owner of Trust Inns with an estate of 500 pubs, is 164th with £625 million.
Peter Harris and family, with a major holding in Bourne Leisure. Equal 170th with £600 million.
Raj Matharu and family: have discreetly built up Grange Hotels, to 182nd with £568 million.
Sir Peter Rigby whose Eden Hotel Collection delivers equal 185th with £550 million.
Marlon Abela, owns Morton’s private members club, the Greenhouse restaurant and Cassis Bistro in London. His £325 million earns 290th.
Adam, Samuel and Jonathan Kaye: two brothers and a cousin, with involvement between them in founding and selling Ask, Zizzi and Prezzo. Adam and Samuel run Tasty plc, operator of Wildwood and Dim T. 295th with £320 million.
Others on the list
Andrew Brownsword of Abode Hotels at 353 with £260 million.
Tim Martin, founder of JD Wetherspoon, has enjoyed a rising fortune this year as JD Wetherspoon company and shares have prospered. £305 million gets 306th, equal with Sir Rocco Forte and Olga Polizzi and family.
Robert Earl founder of Planet Hollywood is 330th on the list with £280 million.
Hugh Osmond, made his name with PizzaExpress and went on to found Punch Taverns, and may once again be looking to participate in hospitality ventures. 367th on the list with a £250 million fortune, as are Guy and Julia Hands (Hand Picked Hotels).
Jamie and Jools Oliver: the ever-present and active Jamie Oliver has the expanding Jamie’s Italian restaurant chain, TV appearances, massive book sales and her children’s wear range to thank for an increasing fortune. 396th on the list with £240m.
Nigel Wray, previously owned a large share of Domino’s Pizza, and now in 402nd place with £236 million.
Luke Johnson whose current range of interests include Patisserie Valerie, Strada, bakery/cafe chain Gails, Red Hot World Buffet, and more – keeping track of the range of his portfolio and activities must have proved a challenge for the Sunday Times, but they bring him in at 458th with £200 million.
