The London School of Economics Students’ Union earlier this year passed a motion to ‘ban beef’ from all menus on campus. Last year, Goldsmiths University also removed beef from all of their menus.
The University of Cambridge has successfully removed all beef and all lamb from their menus and replaced the carnivorous options with plant-based ones. The move also increased foodservice profits at the university.
The latest University to follow suit on the move to remove beef and lamb from menus is Oxford. A motion for banning beef and lamb from University-operated canteens and events was passed with a two-thirds majority by the Student Council.
The motion referred to the EAT Lancet report for sustaining planetary health. The report recommends that in the Global North, the consumption of red meat should be severely reduced, and the consumption of fruit, vegetables, nuts and legumes increased.
The motion was passed with 31 votes for, 9 against and 13 abstentions.
Doubtless the many caterers around the UK that provide University and wider education foodservices will be making copious notes on this transition of choice. Once again in 2020 students are leading the way in shaping not only discussions, but actions.
