The 10pm hospitality curfew that came into effect in September has impacted an industry still trying to recover from lockdown negatively. Today, data released by Paymentsense has revealed just how much less consumers across the UK are spending on hospitality in more than 80,000 locations around the UK.
New data released from Paymentsense today confirms what many have been fearing in stark numbers.
Jon Knott, Head of Customer Insight at Paymentsense said: “New Covid -19 (curfew) measures brought in by the government, meant all pubs and restaurants had to close by 10pm every day of the week, after a turbulent six months for the hospitality industry.
“Our payment data, across the whole of the UK, shows that on the first day the curfew- the 24th September – UK card transactions in restaurants, bars, and pubs across the country fell by 16% and overall sales by 13%, based on the previous week’s data.
“This shows a decrease in transactions and revenue, another adversity that the hospitality industry is facing. Businesses must pivot and adapt as they did to survive the trading challenges that the national lockdown brought. The average transaction value has increased by 3% compared to the week before and 6% compared to the same time last month. The data shows that consumers are likely to be ordering more on the last round due to the increase in the value of the transaction”.
The data is helpful in translating fears into facts, they do not make good reading but they do make for accurate reading. Facts enable businesses to plan, and the slightly encouraging fact that late orders are increasing allow tactics to be developed to maximise on this is helpful.
Methodology: Paymentsense analysed anonymised card transaction data from their customer base. Percentages were calculated based on changes week-on-week and month-on-month to show the effects from the introduction of the 10pm curfew from 24/09/2020.
