The National Space Centre will host a special after-hours Space Lates event on Wednesday 12 August, giving visitors the opportunity to witness a rare partial solar eclipse.
Skywatchers are being offered the chance to experience what is expected to be the UK’s most significant partial solar eclipse until 2090.
With almost 90 per cent of the Sun set to disappear behind the Moon, the eclipse is expected to be one of the most dramatic astronomical events visible from the UK for more than six decades.
The National Space Centre will open specially to help visitors experience the eclipse safely through expert commentary, live telescopes and immersive space-themed activities.
Designed for families, adults and space enthusiasts alike, the event will offer safe, expert-led viewing of the eclipse.
Running from 6pm to 9pm, the evening will combine the National Space Centre’s Space Lates atmosphere with live science engagement, immersive shows and exclusive after-hours access.
Visitors will be able to view the eclipse safely using specialist eclipse glasses included with every ticket.
Expert science communicators and local astronomers will also be on hand to guide guests through the experience.
Live telescope viewing and commentary will enhance the evening, weather permitting, helping visitors understand and enjoy the phenomenon.
For added accessibility, a livestream of the eclipse will also be available on the National Space Centre’s website.
Alongside the eclipse viewing, guests will be able to enjoy a full programme of activities.
This will include award-winning planetarium show We Are Stars, hands-on science activities for all ages and live astronomy engagement with experts.
Visitors will also have exclusive evening access to the National Space Centre’s ground floor galleries, with the café and gift shop open during the event.
Tickets are priced at £10 per person.
