The Mayfair Chippy Extends #VATsTheProblem Campaign and Reduces VAT on Children’s Meals

July 28, 2026

The Mayfair Chippy is passing on the Government’s temporary reduction in VAT on qualifying children’s meals this summer.

From now until 1 September, VAT on children’s meals eaten in the restaurant will be reduced from 20% to 5% in line with the Government’s temporary legislation.

The restaurant said the full saving will be passed directly on to customers.

As a family-friendly British restaurant, The Mayfair Chippy said it is pleased to support an initiative designed to make eating out more affordable during the school holidays.

The restaurant has also chosen to extend its 10 for 10 Tuesdays offer at its Knightsbridge branch.

Under the initiative, guests can receive 10% off their food bill if they add their name to the petition calling for VAT to be cut to 10% for restaurants.

The decision to extend the offer follows the Government’s recent announcement on business rates relief, which The Mayfair Chippy said excluded restaurants while providing support for pubs, clubs and music venues.

The extension reflects the restaurant’s continued support for the #VATsTheProblem campaign, spearheaded by chef Tom Kerridge.

The campaign calls for UK hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10% to help restaurants, pubs, hotels and cafés invest in growth, protect jobs and build long-term stability.

Although the campaign has already surpassed 250,000 signatures, The Mayfair Chippy said it will continue its initiative to help the campaign reach its target of one million signatures.

Jamie Jones, co-founder of The Mayfair Chippy, said: “The summer holidays can be an expensive time for families, so we’re really pleased to be passing the Government’s temporary reduction in VAT on qualifying children’s meals directly on to our guests.

“Hospitality is about far more than serving great food – it’s about creating jobs, supporting local suppliers and giving people places to come together.

“While we welcome this short-term support for families, we also believe a permanent reduction in VAT would make a real difference to independent restaurants like ours.

“It would allow businesses to invest in our teams, our communities and the guest experience, helping to safeguard the future of British hospitality.

“Our ’10 for 10 Tuesdays’ campaign is our way of encouraging customers to join the conversation and show their support for an industry that plays such an important role across the UK.”
