Spain’s multi award-winning flavoured gin brand Puerto de Indias is aiming to raise awareness of the gender pay gap in the UK with a special campaign linking up with some talented female mixologists this International Women’s Day, which takes place on Friday 8th March.
In the UK, according to data from the Office of National Statistics, women earn on average 14.3% less than men per hour. To highlight this inequality and help drive change, Puerto de Indias has also created a unique bottle of its blackberry gin, which has 14.3% less volume than a normal bottle.
Ahead of the day, talented mixologists Ashleigh Cilliers from Hyde & Co in Bristol, Chellsea Dagger from Yard and Coop and Lucy Cotterell from Liquor and Burn both in Manchester, Kelley Hill from Milk in Reading, Courtney Francis from Couch in Birmingham and Giorgia di Stefano from Demon & Wise in London have all created a special cocktail to help raise awareness.
The special edition bottle has also been sent to 400 bartenders, journalists, celebrities, MPs, dignitaries and influencers ahead of International Women’s Day. The unique bottle features calligraphy lettering with words and icons of various professions. From 5pm on the 8th March, the pioneering gin company is asking the nation to #shakeforpayequality by making a cocktail and raising a glass for the incredible women in the UK.
Samantha Burke, Managing Director of Love Drinks, which imports and distributes the Puerto de Indias brand in the UK, said: “It’s been great to be part of this campaign and an absolute joy to link up with these mixologists, who are tearing it up in some of the UK’s hottest bars. When I was first coming up, mixology was a bit of a boy’s club so it’s brilliant to see so many talented females winning cocktail competitions and taking senior and management roles. With the amazing drinks they have created, there’s no excuse for not shaking up a cocktail for pay equality from 5pm on Friday.”
Isabela Lluch, Innovation and International Marketing Manager of Puerto de Indias, said: “Puerto de Indias Blackberry was created by the women at our distillery so we felt it was the perfect product to be used in this special bottle and campaign to address the gender pay gap issue in the UK. From 5pm on Friday the 8th March, we’re looking forward to creating some noise and raising a glass to those hardworking professionals who put their heart and soul into what they do.”
About Puerto de Indias
Puerto de Indias are the true pioneers of the first fresh strawberry gin to reach the global market and are the leading premium gin brand in the strawberry gin segment in Spain. Using Seville’s famous Torre del Oro as its emblem and drawing on the essence of the south of Spain, just like its founders – Puerto de Indias is unique, brave, charismatic and synonymous with Spanish adventure and creativity.
Produced in Carmona, Seville, in one of the oldest and most traditional distilleries in Andalusia, its name is related with the discovery of America and a period in which Seville became one of the main ports for the exchange of goods between Spain and the New World. Puerto de Indias was originally created by a happy mistake when two Sevillian brothers decided to macerate locally grown strawberries in alcohol. Not realising the effects that a Seville summer would have on the fruit and liquid, a lush, strawberry pink gin was born and the flavoured gin revolution began.
Fusing age-old techniques with the latest innovation, the distillery carefully sources and uses the finest locally grown Andalusian fresh strawberries, blackberries, fruits and botanicals. The combination of know-how and innovation, alongside dedication, traditional production, quality fresh ingredients and care in the meticulous distillation process have allowed the creation of a product range with its own personality.
Now a market leader in Spain and the second biggest flavoured gin brand in the world (according to IWSR figures), Puerto de Indias is available in 55 countries worldwide.
The most awarded strawberry gin on the planet with an inimitable record of wins and honours since its inception including wins at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition, the London Spirit Competition and the Bartender Spirits Awards.
