By Angela Green: July opening in April.
Opening on 25th April, July will be a new Alsatian-inspired restaurant and wine bar bringing nourishing, comfort-style food and low-intervention wines to Fitzrovia’s Charlotte Street. Built around the joy of bringing friends together over shared meals, the restaurant will be an all-day affair, serving breakfast pastries and coffee in the morning, a concise lunchtime offering, and an evening menu featuring bar snacks, seasonal small plates, charcuterie and cheese.
The kitchen will be headed up by former 40 Maltby Street Sous Chef Holly Hayes, and will feature a regularly changing menu. At lunchtime, guests can expect generous, well-crafted sandwiches with fillings like roast beef, horseradish crème fraiche, and watercress; as well as homemade soups such as nettle and spinach soup with smoked bacon. Once evening falls, an array of smaller and larger plates reflecting the best produce of the season will be served, with dishes such as lamb hearts, white asparagus and hollandaise and the simply composed Lemon Sole, clams, and leeks, dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves. July’s Saturday lunch special, will be a simple but perfectly executed whole roast Fosse Meadows chicken with homemade mayonnaise; the ultimate comfort lunch to be enjoyed amongst loved ones.
On the wine front, the list has been created in partnership with sommelier Honey Spencer and will feature a variety of low-intervention wines from small producers in Europe.
July’s interiors, designed by Ashleigh James, will reflect the eclectic and modern style of July’s co-founders Solynka and Julian, and will feature a collection of regularly rotating artwork. The colour palette of pale teal and warm yellow accents will be offset by deep red details, a curated vintage lamp collection and a beautiful wooden floor. Taking the centre stage at the back of the dining room will be a beautiful, bespoke hand-painted mural created by friend and artist Orfeo Tagiuri.
July is the brainchild of food writer Solynka Dumas and her partner Julian Oschmann who met during lockdown when they were both living in the same apartment block in Berlin. Upon meeting, the pair instantly bonded over their shared love for entertaining and the lack of it at the time, so began hosting clandestine dinners for friends. As the venture evolved, the pair sought to bring their shared passion to life with July, a neighbourhood restaurant which will work with small growers and producers, offering seasonal, ingredient-led dining, in the heart of Fitzrovia.
