I recently reached out to some friends of H&C News from across our industry for donations for our annual golf day to help raise awareness of and funds for two organisations that help the industry in recruitment and retention. Zest Quest Asia and The CRUMBS Project.
Zest Quest Asia was founded in 2013 by Cyrus and Pervin Todiwala to build knowledge of and experience in classical Asian cookery in UK college curricula.
The CRUMBS Project is a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting disadvantaged adults by providing hospitality and catering learning and development programmes which enable them to develop a wide range of professional and life skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem and to prepare for employment and independent living.
One of the people I asked was Paul Askew.
Paul Askew is Chef Patron at The Art School in Liverpool, he also has an inspiring commitment to developing the next generation of culinary talent. For over three decades, Askew has worked with apprentice and trainee chefs, investing time away from the pass to nurture their skills and to encourage success in the industry.
Knowing times are challenging for most in our industry, the requests I made ended with something along the lines of I know how tough things are at the moment and understand if not possible.
Paul did not hesitate to support the work being done by Cyrus and Pervin Todiwala at Zest Quest Asia, and Professor Peter Jones at The CRUMBS Project, and was exceedingly generous in doing so.
So, after dinner when the individual and team golf awards from the day’s play have been presented, the following will be one of the Prize Draw/Auction lots… Excellence lunch for 2 with Champagne on arrival and wines with each course.
I have attended Zest Quest Asia final and awards days, and I have spent time in Bournemouth with the team at The CRUMBS Project. Both make a huge difference to the young people they work with, and both make a positive contribution to the culture of our industry.
So, I would like to say thank you to Paul, and assure him that his contribution will help both organisations do even more for our industry.
