There are many good business reasons for hospitality to embrace being sustainable, no real choice in the matter being one, making a venue more attractive to consumers is another. Making your business appeal to Generation Z job seekers could be the most important of all.

For the first time since records began the Office for National Statistics has announced there are fewer unemployed people than job vacancies. Job vacancies rose to a record of 1.3 million in February to April, as unemployment continued to drop to 3.7 per cent – the lowest level seen since 1974.

So, within the job market hospitality will now have to compete more than ever before with other industry sectors for the same people.

Most of the job vacancies in hospitality could be classified as ‘entry level’, and as such open to pretty much anyone that wants to get to know hospitality’s ropes. Most positions open will see recruitment aimed at young people, but are we talking to young people in their language. The language of sustainability and diversity?

Talkin’ bout this generation

Understanding how to communicate with this group starts with understanding what is important to them when they consider their potential workplace. Thankfully organisations like Deloitte have done much research here, and if this is a subject you are interested in, taking a look at Deloitte’s report – ‘Understanding Generation Z in the workplace’. It contains much food for thought.

One conclusion of the authors of the report is: “Companies must demonstrate their commitment to a broader set of societal challenges such as sustainability, climate change, and hunger.”

Hospitality is well positioned to leverage the work done over many years to emphasise to young people they can join their teams in a sustainable workplace… Please discuss.

If you would like to apply to join such a discussion taking place at Coworth Park on the 31st August at the H&C News Sustainability Roundtable, in Partnership with Meiko UK please drop an email to Denis Sheehan on editor@handcnews.com. The discussion will be chaired by Katherine Price, Sustainability Editor, H&C News.
