Boris Johnson’s recent roadmap was driven straight down the middle of the road, for many it was overly cautious, for others prudent, and for some reckless. It did, at least at the time, achieve his political objective in trying to keep most people sanguine, if not entirely happy.
The chancellor needs to at the very least adopt the same objective tomorrow in his budget, but cannot achieve it by steering a similar trajectory to his boss. He needs to deliver a big and bold budget with substantial support for hospitality.
Small steps will not make a sufficient difference, as the economic landscape hospitality inhabits requires significant stimulus to emerge from, and that needs to be sustained.
Rishi Sunak’s budget is also stage two of the PM’s roadmap, Johnson has delivered his plans for the project and the chancellor now needs to deliver the finance for it.
The PM is politically reliant on the chancellor here, if the money isn’t provided to reach the end of the road, the roadmap becomes redundant, at least in economic terms.
Rishi Sunak’s career in the world of investment banking enables a clear view of what is required to enable businesses that were viable pre-pandemic to emerge from it. His sights are also now clearly set on his next job. If he is serious about eventually usurping Boris he needs to avoid following him down the middle of the road tomorrow.
