The volume of Covid-19 patients in London hospitals is fast approaching the position government always wanted to avoid, being overwhelmed. With admissions increasing daily London hospitals are working with hotels to manage discharged patients.
The London Hotel Group has started taking Covid-positive patients who are homeless from King’s College hospital in south London and is looking after them in its Best Western-branded hotel in nearby Croydon. It is also now in talks with 20 other NHS trusts to provide circa 5,000 beds for discharged patients.
Meher Nawab, CEO, London Hotel Group commented by saying: “We will be looking to roll this solution out across our hotels to provide hospitals with a lifeline at this critical time.”
The speed of the ‘roll out’ is necessary to try and retain capacity in hospitals for patients requiring urgent treatment, but it is also attracting concerns that hotels are not equipped to look after hospital patients.
This is a dilemma that the NHS, Government and the hotel industry will need to work on closely and collaboratively to provide a viable solution to in the months ahead.
London Hotel Group and Best Western Hotels are currently planning to provide a nationwide service. This is in in association with Process C-19, a not-for profit planning and co-ordination organisation to support our NHS with rapid deployment of services during the Covid-19 pandemic.
