Data from Imperial College London shows that having tested more than 105,000 people between 13-24 November, Covid-19 infection rates are down circa 30%, and the R Rate at 0.88 has lowered.
The testing data comes from testing called a React-1 study, that is highly respected, and researchers are confident the test gives the most up to date picture available. REACT-1 is a repeated cross-sectional survey of SARS-CoV-2 swab-positivity in random samples of the population of England.
The results also show that some of the worst-hit areas in England saw the most significant declines in cases, but the rate of reduction is slower than the rate of increase seen prior to lockdown.
There was an increase in prevalence in young people aged 5 to 17, but a decline in all adult age groups.
The decline in prevalence was especially large in the North of England where it fell by over 50% in the two regions, the North West and North East. In contrast, prevalence in London and the Midlands remained almost unchanged. However, the rapid growth of the epidemic seen in London and the South of the country during mid- to late-October was no longer apparent.
Positivity was higher among people of Asian ethnicity than white people. Higher prevalence also showed among individuals living in the most deprived areas and those living in households with the largest number of people.
The study was funded by the Department of Health and Social Care in England.
