Travelodge has opened its 15th Merseyside hotel which features the UK’s first Instagrammable postcard wall and announces is now actively looking for a further three hotel sites across Merseyside. The expansion programme represents a further investment of £18 million for third party investors and will create 75 new jobs.
Luciana Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree joined Nigel Mackenzie, Travelodge, Operations Director, to officially open Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge and unveil the UK’s first Instagrammable postcard wall art, showcasing what makes ‘Liverpool So Great!’ – As voted by the nation.
To create the 16ft x 10ft Instagrammable postcard wall, Travelodge surveyed 2,000 British adults to seek their views on what makes Liverpool so great in regard to its most iconic figures, landmarks and the city’s greatest assets.
Travelodge commissioned artist, Luke McDonnell, to take inspiration from these key findings and create a bespoke Instagrammable postcard wall.
Britons voted the most popular and influential group in the history of pop music, The Beatles as their overall favourite iconic figures. The much loved singer, TV presenter, actress and author who dedicated over 50 years to show business, Cilla Black OBE came in second place.
Making the top three ranking is football legend, Steven Gerrard MBE who spent the majority of his career playing for his home team, Liverpool and also as club captain for the England national team.
Fourth place was awarded to national hero, Bill Shankly OBE who brought world-renowned success to Liverpool FC, gaining promotion to the First Division and winning three League Championships and the UEFA Cup.
Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge, the company’s 581st hotel and its 15th property in Merseyside is located in the former, century old, prestigious, Plessey’s headquarters building on Edge Lane, which had previously been vacant since 2006.
The office conversion, 71-room hotel features an on-site restaurant called the Bar Café, complementary car parking and represents a multi-million investment for the landlord. It has also created 25 new jobs within the community and offers rooms from £29. The hotel is ideally located by the city’s largest retail outlet, Liverpool Shopping Park.
At the official opening of Edge Lane Travelodge, the hotel chain also announced , that Merseyside is a key growth area for the company and its actively looking for a further three hotel sites in: Birkenhead, Formby and St Helens. This expansion represents an investment of £18 million for third party investors and will create 75 new jobs. It will also boost the company’s portfolio to 18 hotels in the county.
Luciana Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree, said: “I am really thrilled to open this fantastic new hotel. It’s great to see the postcard wall, dedicated to our city’s greatest achievements and landmarks, centrally placed in the hotel. The artwork truly pays homage to what makes Liverpool so loved as a city. The hotel will serve a vibrant new creative area including the new Littlewoods Studios – the Hollywood of the North.”
Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge is being managed by local boy Tom Margetts, who joined Travelodge as an assistant hotel manager in 2012.
