“No more hours spent over the phone after service to pass orders” says Matt Osborne, Head Chef at Hām, a London-based restaurant. We asked Matt about how he sees technology shaping the restaurant industry – instead of the usual food delivery debate, he told us about a new app called Rekki.
It’s been 3 months since his team changed the way they order their supplies and ingredients.“We used to order our supplies just like everyone else, by leaving voicemails to our suppliers” said Osborne. However, as anyone involved in this part of running a kitchen or bar will know, it’s all too easy to lose track and nearly impossible to collaborate without making occasional mistakes. But Osborne’s team have started using Rekki, a mobile app that allows them to order supplies on a smartphone, track the status of orders and chat directly with their suppliers.
It turns out Hām is not the only restaurant to move away from the traditional ways to order. Chefs and restaurant managers that we spoke to told us how Rekki has removed daily headaches by bringing the teams and the suppliers together in a single chat inside the app, reducing the number of ordering mistakes and providing a quick and easy way to communicate and track the orders. “Rekki saves me a lot of time, stress and headache” said Nathan Grunberg, the manager of Sunny Hill Cafe. “I really like Rekki. Everything is one place, in a very simple app. It has made delegating very easy. Now the team is in charge and I can easily monitor what they order, even when I am away.”, Grunberg added.
It seems that Rekki has managed to become central to the way its users operate their restaurants. “It is as easy to use as WhatsApp. I have used the app every day for a year and have recommended it to a bunch of other business owners. I really think it can make their lives easier ” Grunberg told us.
Surprisingly, Rekki does not have a visible profile and their website mentions that they are in an-invite only beta phase. Despite our efforts, the Rekki team has not returned our request for information.
To find out more we walked through West Hampstead and found that many restaurants we visited were already using Rekki on a daily basis. Owners and staff alike were very enthusiastic about how it has removed a lot of stress from their work. With such encouraging progress, Rekki is the app to watch for hospitality professionals.
