RED Sky At Night… A look inside Glasgow’s newest destination bar

May 31, 2018

Offering spectacular views of the city, the hotly anticipated Red Sky Bar in Glasgow’s Finnieston area opened its doors to the public earlier this month (May).

Occupying the 9th floor of the new Radisson RED hotel, Red Sky Bar offers a completely new bar experience and is part of a wider, ongoing revival of the Clydeside area.

Sweeping floor to ceiling windows wrap around the bar area and there is a spacious outdoor roof terrace for guests to enjoy striking views of both the city and the river that built it.

The bar front is made from Portora Gold marble, an elegant black marble with sleek gold veins running through it. Behind the bar, drinks and optics are stored on glass shelves and illuminated with LED lights.

Any walls in the bar that are not glazed are tiled in floor to ceiling Calacutta gold porcelain tiles, a beautiful white marble with gold veins, contrasting to the dark bar front to give the bar a spacious, open feel.

Adding warmth to the interior, a contemporary fireplace sits at the back of the bar encased in glass with modern artwork featuring above.

On discussing the design on the bar, Mark said: “I was very excited to be invited to design the Red Sky Bar and terrace at the new Radisson RED hotel. It was a unique opportunity as I believe nothing like it exists in Glasgow.

The design for the hotel is very bold so we decided on a contemporary classic design for the Red Sky Bar which would appeal to a wide demographic.

It was crucial that the design emphasised the panoramic views of the river Clyde, the Finnieston crane, the Hydro, the Armadillo, along with the headquarter buildings of the BBC and STV across the river.”

Accessed by its very own lift, guests can expect to be well looked after by RED’s team of experienced bar staff who are responsible for mixing up Red Sky Bar’s signature cocktails. The aptly named RED SKY @ NIGHT blends St Germain Elderflower liqueur with gomme syrup, a twist of lemon and a splash of cranberry juice.

Cocktails can be enjoyed alongside a selection of small plates and sharing boards. From halloumi fries and haggis bons to charcuterie and cheese boards, there is sure to be something to suit everyone’s palate.

Frankie McGovern, Food and Drink Manager, comes to RED fresh from Kained Holdings, where he worked as Operations Manager across some of Glasgow’s biggest bars and restaurants including Lebowskis and Porter and Rye.

Taking care of all things Red Sky Bar is Mike McColm, who honed his love for innovative cocktail creations at Glasgow institution, Tiki Bar & Kitsch Inn. Supported by Grant Caulfield, Sky Bar Creative, the two have been serving up delicious cocktails with a view.

On the opening of Red Sky Bar, Mike said: “We want Red Sky Bar to become a favourite Clyde-side hang out for everyone, not just those staying at the hotel. We want to create an atmosphere that suits all occasions, be that special drinks to celebrate birthdays, pre- drinks before shows at the Hydro, or a quick pint after work.

“We had worked on Red Sky Bar for such a long time and now that it’s finally open, the team are so excited.”

Every weekend, local DJs provide the soundtrack and create an atmosphere that is sure to get people venturing down to the river again and again. Seating up to 120 guests at a time and with a special private function room with its own, private views of the city skyline, Red Sky Bar is set to be a favourite venue this summer.
