The craze for the Scone-Brioche hybrid, aptly named the Scioche™, has hit Wales after a selection of Pembrokeshire’s famous seaside foodie haunts have launched the tasty treat in time for the busy summer period.
Set to take the seaside resort of Tenby by storm this holiday season, award-winning Cafe Môr based at Freshwater West beach, The Fat Seagull and The Hideout Café in Tenby and Sue’s Pantry in Saundersfoot have become the first in Wales to showcase the treat in some typically creative ways.
Combining an award-winning brioche recipe with the most loved elements of a traditional British scone to offer the best of both bakes, the Scioche™ Original can be treated like a scone, served with cream, berries, jam or curd, while the Sicilian Lemon & Poppy seed version offers added versatility as it can also be toasted and topped with savoury treats such as crab meat, scallops or chorizo.
Jonathan Williams, Founder of Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company who is utilizing the Scioche™ alongside the best of the region’s seafood, said:
“We love creative new products so we’re the delighted to be one of the first to have the Scioche™ in Pembrokeshire and kick off the craze in Wales. Our Scioche™ special uses the Sicilian Lemon & Poppy seed, which is toasted and topped with local smoked mackerel, salad and our famous condiments. It’s a winner and we’re confident it will be a big hit come beach time.”
Joy Bishop from The Fat Seagull who is offering the Scioche™ as part of afternoon tea commented:
“Our customers love a something new, exciting and indulgent so the Scioche™ ticks all the boxes. Served with jam and cream, I’m expecting queues this summer.”
Zoe Burgess, owner of The Hideout Café which offers the Scioche™ alongside their other cakes said:
“I was hooked after my first one – they’re absolutely lush and they have already seen a lot of interest from customers. Many of our customers are on holiday so they’re here to treat themselves so our Scioche™ with cream and lemon curd is perfect with afternoon tea.”
Emily Brace from scone specialists Sue’s Pantry said:
“We make our own selection of scones so a product has to have the x-factor if we are going to buy it in especially but the Scioche™ is a fun twist on a classic so we’re proud to offer them. We offer them with Rodda’s cream and fresh strawberries.”
Invented by Kent’s creative artisan bakers Speciality Breads, the Scioche™ already created a media stir when launched in London in April and is now being distributed in Pembrokeshire by Ice Cream brand food distributor Upton Farms. Upton Farms’ Sales Director Keith Adie comments:
“We’re delighted to be the first company to bring the unique Scioche to Pembrokeshire and provide our customers with an exclusive that can help put them on the map. The feedback already has been incredible and as it’s a big foodie area with afternoon tea a particular speciality, I think they will be a big summer-craze.”
