The dynamic group behind Covent Garden’s The Black Penny launches Firedog, Aeegean inspired restaurant & bar.
Fork & Blade, the dynamic group behind multiple London projects including Covent Garden’s modern coffee house The Black Penny is proud to be expanding its hospitality portfolio with the opening of its second eatery.
Firedog is a modern Aegean inspired restaurant and bar on Newman Street, Fitzrovia, opening for all day breakfast and lunch from January 2017, is the latest venture by Fork & Blade, who is making its mark within the ever-evolving and competitive hospitality sector.
Following the success of The Black Penny, with its own unique breakfast and brunch offering, Firedog will serve a menu of dishes influenced by the street food of Greece and Turkey, inspired by the richly diverse produce found in a group of islands located between the Greek and Anatolian Peninsulas.
The culinary offering was devised by George Notley, Executive Chef of the Fork & Blade group, who had extensively travelled the region to capture its gastronomic heritage, bringing the taste of the Aegean Islands to London. The vibrant, diverse and mouth-watering mezze style dishes are updated with a contemporary twist, designed to appeal to a discerning London crowd.
Fork & Blade has taken the ‘Firedog’ name from the stone fire dogs that were used in the earliest form of grilled cooking found in Santorini, dating back to the 17th Century BC. The restaurant reinvents this ancient style of cooking using an olive wood chip fired grill and rich ingredients.
Innovative breakfast and lunch dishes will be served along with a modern approach to mezze feasting, encouraging diners to try and share a multitude of flavours. Firedog has a strict ‘no avocado’ policy and is on a mission to reinvigorate the morning dining scene with unique plates.
Highlights from the menu include:
- The Crispy Sujuk Sandwich (the new and improved BLT). Sujuk beef ‘chorizo’, served on wholemeal sourdough with dill mayo, sweet chilli, fresh tomatoes and lambs lettuce
- Kippers with Sumac Butter served with spinach, grilled wholemeal sourdough and a poached egg
- Grilled Stone Fruit with kaymak, honey, salted pistachios and brioche toast
- Flaked Smoked Mackerel, on grilled sourdough with sumac onions, fresh parsley and drizzled with dill oil
Drinks are taken just as seriously as the food. The Firedog espresso is the bespoke blend ‘cicciolina’ from The Black Penny by The Roastery Department coffee roasters. Some
drink highlights from behind the bar include unique Sumac and Za’tar Beer on draught with South London’s micro-brewery, the Partizan Brewery. Non-alcoholic drinks include sodas with house-made syrup infusions include Preserved Lemon & Ginger, Pomegranate & Blood Orange, and Mastika Plum & Mint Soda.
Firedog is a relaxed space that takes brunch and lunch seriously, lending itself to be the perfect spot for long lunches with friends, a meeting place to impress for business or pleasure, or for the times that you want to mix them both.
