London’s iconic Café Royal is celebrating its 150th Anniversary with a series of parties and events to showcase the hotel’s last century and a half of history and fame. The celebrations continue with a very special event that will see the Ten Room transformed into a boxing ring for one night only. Boxers from the Royal Marines will take to Café Royal’s ring for a one off evening of boxing bouts on Tuesday November 24th in aid of the Royal Marines Charity.
The evening will pay tribute to Café Royal’s profound heritage as the spiritual home of boxing, while raising funds to enable the Royal Marines Charity to help injured marines and their families to live lives to the full and maintain the mind set and values to which they aspired when serving. The match will take place in the hotel’s beautiful restaurant, Ten Room, where tables will be set up around the ring for spectators to enjoy the event. There will also be space above the restaurant in The Club’s Gallery, giving guests the perfect platform from which to view the ring and the bouts taking place.
Homage to Café Royal’s prolific sporting heritage
In 1951 Café Royal became home to the National Sporting Club, holding black tie dinners before bouts, often frequented by many famed boxers including Muhammad Ali. The original National Sporting Club founders, the Earl of Lonsdale and the fifth Marquis of Queensberry also laid down their set of boxing rules, ‘The Queensberry Rules for Boxing’ here in 1867, cementing Café Royal’s place in boxing history. Every notable British boxer, from Henry Cooper to Frank Bruno, has graced Café Royal’s doors at some point. This match will continue Café Royal’s sporting legacy, bringing the property once again into the forefront of British boxing.
The evening of the 24th November is set to be a glamorous homage to Café Royal’s prolific sporting heritage with VIPs from the sporting, entertainment and music industries in attendance and an exciting auction raising vital funds for the Royal Marines Charity.
