H&C News meets with suppliers regularly to keep up to date with the latest product and service innovations, aiming to get the inside track on what companies offer to the market and how it is delivered. This week, we met with Jakob Schreyer, CEO of orderbird, the fast-growing supplier of iPad point of sale systems for the catering industry worldwide. orderbird provides a full service POS system that is more flexible and easier to use than traditional cash registers – called orderbird POS. Based on an iPad, this POS system is truly mobile and smart. More than 5,000 caterers already improve their daily business with orderbird POS.
How does orderbird POS actually work?
orderbird POS is an intuitive and user-friendly app that works on iPads, iPods and iPhones. Our goal is to simplify the operations of cafes, bars and restaurants. With our POS-system, restaurant owners can easily change products and prices on their menu, manage tables and waiters, split tabs and dispatch orders to multiple printers, such as the kitchen and the bar. Since orderbird POS is a lot cheaper than conventional POS systems, small businesses get the chance to benefit from features like wireless ordering that are otherwise only included in very expensive POS solutions. We also offer an extensive range of supplemental services, including comprehensible charts relevant to your business, ready-to-print financial reports in the form preferred by bookkeepers (DATEV, CSV, X and Z reports, etc.) and fully integrated yet affordable credit card payment options. Over all, orderbird POS enables restaurants, bars and cafes to focus on what really matters: their guests.
How did orderbird’s success story begin?
The initial idea for orderbird came in 2009. Bastian Schmidtke read an article on Business Insider about the US military using iPod Touches to remotely detonate bombs. As an Apple power user and a POS systems merchant, he asked himself: If Apple devices are powerful enough for military use, why not use them in the catering industry as well? The timing was perfect: In 2010 Apple launched the iPad on top of their already existing products the iPod Touch and the iPhone. Jakob Schreyer, Artur Hasselbach, and Patrick Brienen collaborated with Bastian Schmidtke to refine the business concept and launched the company in 2011.
Who uses orderbird POS?
More than 5,000 caterers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland work with orderbird POS. Our flexible POS system suits various caterers’ needs: Restaurants of all types, from small bars and coffeeshops to full-service restaurants, clubs and even large beer gardens operate their daily business with orderbird POS. This makes orderbird one of the most popular POS systems in the catering industry worldwide.
What makes orderbird valuable for caterers as an iPad POS system?
The complete orderbird POS system is significantly cheaper, more efficient and more professional than comparable systems. At the same time, orderbird is a uniquely flexible POS system capable of adapting easily to the individual needs of modern catering operations. The orderbird iPad POS system stands out as a real revolution from the traditional POS market, drawing strong interest from restaurant owners who are open to new technology and are looking for an affordable yet easy-to-operate alternative to conventional POS solutions.
At orderbird we do not only work for our customers but also with them. Since the POS system is software-based, it is always open to new features and updates. What else does orderbird have to offer?
Our aim is to offer a full service system so we do not only sell a cash register. Instead, orderbird provides caterers with smart and easy solutions for their daily business. One of our supplemental services is orderbird PAY which includes different cashless payment methods including credit cards, PayPal or Apple Pay. Since guests nowadays demand internet access in restaurants, cafés and bars, we also offer orderbird WIFI. This service ensures caterers legal security, even if guests access illegal websites.
