Belfast’s Titanic Quarter already has Premier Inn at its entrance, but full planning is already in place for a further four, although those for the boutique hotel in the Harland and Wolff HQ and Drawing Office are subject to planning amendment.
A spokesperson for Titanic Quarter said:
“With the enormous success of Titanic Belfast and expanding business activity within Titanic Quarter, there are long-term plans to develop another four hotels within the development. These are expected to range between three and five star with interest sought from local, national and international operators.”
Kerrie Sweeney, CEO of Titanic Foundation Ltd, which holds the lease for the headquarters building and submitted the new planning application (see CGI of the design above), said:
“The former Harland & Wolff headquarters building, including the Drawing Offices, are among Northern Ireland’s most important industrial heritage assets. The planning application is part of a wider process with Titanic Quarter and the Heritage Lottery Fund to safeguard the buildings and give them a new lease of life. The current planning submission is similar to one previously approved, but will further enhance access for the public and heritage preservation.
“A second round application has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund under its Heritage Enterprise Scheme to secure £5m and a decision is expected at the end of January 2015. It’s anticipated that the project will generate 250 jobs during construction and 75 jobs once opened.
“A name and operator for the hotel are still under discussion, but the building is testimony to 100 years of shipbuilding and the 1,000 ships which Harland & Wolff designed in the original Drawing Offices. Telling this story is a major element of the project and will be reflected in the name and design of the hotel.”
