As recently announced in H & C News, pie maker The Pie Kitchen of Bury St Edmunds was crowned Supreme Champion at the annual British Pie Awards, which took place in Melton Mowbray on 24th April 2013. Organised and hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, the awards broke all records this year as a staggering 983 pies were entered from across the UK. However, readers will know that the Football Pie category is one that we follow particularly closely, and H & C News was delighted to be involved in the judging of this category this year. Led by Charlie Turnbull of Turnbull’s Deli of Shaftesbury, the judging team (pictured above) included Claire Danter from Ladies in Pigs, as well as Matthew Underwood, Executive Chef of the Marriott Hotel, Leicester. This well-informed and demanding team judged no fewer than 41 entries this year, against both technical and taste criteria.
All entries were anonymous – judges had no idea who had produced the pies, for what football club – and Piglet’s Pantry emerged triumphant, taking first (steak and blue cheese), second (steak in ale with mushrooms) and third (butternut squash and spicey vegetable) places in what was a genuinely ‘hotly contested’ category.
Our congratulations go to Piglet’s Pantry for providing the supporters of Brighton & Hove Albion with a real treat on match days!
