Sudbury House Hotel has re-launched after a complete refurbishment. The 49 bedroom hotel is home to two restaurants and a lounge bar and is located on the edge of the Cotswolds in the picturesque market town of Faringdon. General Manager Ulrike le Roux has overseen the entire transformation over the past two years, including all bedrooms, public areas, dining areas and exterior.
The four star hotel offers a relaxed informal environment and the Magnolia Brasserie with 160 covers is open daily serving a selection of traditional British and European dishes. The Brasserie is open for breakfast through to dinner. Morning coffee and Afternoon Tea can be enjoyed al-fresco with views over the quiet landscaped gardens. Al-fresco dining is a must in the summer months.
Restaurant 56
Located in a Grade II listed building now adjoined to Sudbury House Hotel is Restaurant 56. The building, originally a distinguished Georgian house previously owned by Sir William Glock (BBC Controller of Music) is now a fine dining 28 cover restaurant and bar. Filled with a selection of antiques, artworks and luxury fabrics, Restaurant 56 offers a complete contrast to Sudbury House Hotel.
Award winning Executive Head Chef Andrew Scott was appointed in early 2014 to launch Restaurant 56 as a destination restaurant. Andrew gained his first Michelin star in the 2014 guide at The Curlew Restaurant in East Sussex. Today, Andrew Scott’s menus celebrate modern British cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. Lunch, afternoon tea and dinner are available Tuesday to Saturday.
Sergio Martinez Rios is the Restaurant Manager at Restaurant 56, his previous experience includes Restaurant Sat Bains where he held the position of Deputy Manager.
Andrew’s dishes include ‘Pigeon Carpaccio, White Truffle Custard, Madeira Jelly, Salt Baked Jerusalem Artichokes’; ‘Roast Breast of Creedy Carver Duck, Champ Polenta, Beurre Noisee Salsify, Rhubarb’; ‘English Rose Veal and Honeyed Sweetbread, White Asparagus, Almond and Tarragon, Madeira Sauce’; and ‘Roasted Medallion of Monkfish, Curried Red Lentils, Cauliflower Fondant, Lemongrass and Ginger Sauce’.
Selections of wines from both the old and new worlds are available from countries as diverse as Austria, Chile, France and Lebanon but English wines also feature on the wine list. A popular white served at Restaurant 56 is the Phoenix, Coleridge Hill from Gloucestershire. Wine pairings are offered with the Tasting Menu.
Faringdon Folly
A short walk from the hotel is Folly Hill featuring the Faringdon Folly. Lord Berners was a larger-than-life man and built the tower to tease his neighbours. At the time he insisted it would be entirely useless but today the views from the tower are remarkable and well worth the 104 stairs. The stunning views include the oldest chalk carving in Britain and the Uffington White Horse. Throughout Folly Hill and indeed the town of Faringdon, visitors may spot brightly coloured doves, these follow the eccentric behaviour of Lord Berners who himself dyed his flock of doves in colours of the rainbow. A witty book released last year by author Sofka Zinovieff ‘The Mad Boy, Lord Berners, My Grandmother and Me’ tells the story of a man renowned for his eccentricity including his practical jokes, those doves and his sexuality.
