Workshop Coffee’s ambitious plans to introduce the entire UK to the sweetest, cleanest, freshest and most sustainably-procured coffee possible, continue with the announcement of one of their most exciting developments.
Following an exhaustive search for an appropriate space, Workshop will open a new 3,500 sq ft roastery in Bethnal Green this August to replace the brand’s original production space in Clerkenwell (see roaster at back of pic above).
Developed in response to a growing demand that has seen the Clerkenwell roastery stretched to capacity, the state-of-the-art facility in Vyner Street will supply the brand’s four outlets – along with its UK and Europe-wide wholesale customers and burgeoning mail order business – with coffee that is both traceable and representative of its origins.
The company’s approach has always been underpinned by the three pillars of sourcing, roasting and brewing. The Workshop Roastery will allow it to speed up production whilst ensuring that its high quality standards are maintained and eventually exceeded.
Production
The main production equipment will consist of a new 25 kg Probatone roaster which will join the 12 kg Probatone that has served Clerkenwell so well for the last few years. The Workshop Roastery will also serve as a logistics centre for the UK and Europe.
Workshop’s highly trained team will work from coffee in its purest form – the green seed. The green, which changes with the seasons, can be traced from mills, farms and co-operatives throughout the world, predominantly in Central and South America and Africa.
They will then be responsible for roasting each individual coffee in its own way, ensuring that the inherent sweetness, clarity, acidity and balance are showcased.
Although first and foremost a production space, Workshop Roastery will also offer the local neighbourhood a unique retail coffee experience, and will house a mobile bar which will be used for external events going forward.
