The Prime Minister earlier today made a statement relating to the ongoing Brexit ‘negotiations’ with the EU, indicating that the UK could walk away with no deal. In the statement Boris Johnson said that the UK should “get ready” for no trade deal with the EU.
Boris Johnson declined to be drawn on whether the UK was now ‘willing’ to walk away from the Brexit process due to differences over competition issues and fisheries that remain unresolved.
During the statement Boris Johnson said that initially a Canada style trading relationship was his goal. He then said that the continued desire of the EU to control “our legislative freedoms, our fisheries in a way that is completely unacceptable to an independent country” left him to make a final decision about the “likely outcome”.

The Prime Minister then went on to highlight his intention to seek a deal like Australia’s.
It seems from the statement that a multitude of options still remain open, but with the 1 Jan 2021 deadline approaching, the Prime Minister is going to have to take one, and soon.
The new business landscape that comes with Brexit will undoubtedly slow food and drink imports and many more essentials of hospitality coming into the UK. UK exporters of hospitality goods to Europe will also be similarly impacted.
What tariffs might apply to trade with the EU post 1 Jan 2021 also remains unclear and will remain so until an agreement, if any, is reached. The brinkmanship from both sides could be ended by the clock.
Brexit was always contentious, and now the timing of its implementation could not be worse for hospitality. With some options that could lessen the impact still open to government, let’s hope that a no deal is not the path taken.
