Hospitality businesses that are closed due to stricter Covid-19 lockdown measures will have two-thirds of their employees’ salaries paid by the government.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak has just announced the scope added to the Job Support Scheme, a successor to the furlough scheme, and said: “It will provide a safety net for businesses across the UK who are required to temporarily close their doors, giving them the right support at the right time.”
Full details have not yet emerged, but the government has confirmed it will pay employees who cannot work due to their employer being forced to close 67% of their salaries, up to a limit of £2,100 per month.
The new scheme will be applied from November 1 and continue for at least six months before being reviewed.
Rishi Sunak said: “Throughout the crisis the driving force of our economic policy has not changed. I have always said that we will do whatever is necessary to protect jobs and livelihoods as the situation evolves.”
That statement will go down well with many in hospitality as it does seem to address some of the immediate dangers to hospitality businesses.
