Club Mexicana, specialists in Mexican vegan food, are to begin their residency at Pamela on the 17th January 2017, which will see a menu packed with vibrant Mexican flavours guaranteed to get your taste buds dancing. Founded by Meriel Armitage, who – frustrated at the lack of creative vegan food in London – set about to break boundaries and challenge the preconception that vegan food is all chickpeas and chia seeds.
Inspired by the diverse food scene she encountered on her travels in cities including LA, New York and San Francisco, Meriel set out to capture the vibrancy of Mexican food. Pioneering her fun style of vegan street food with Kerb and Street Feast, Club Mexicana makes great-tasting food that just happens to be vegan.
The menu takes a twist on Mexican ‘meaty’ classics, re-incarnated as vegan dishes, such as such as the Al Pastor Taco with pineapple and chilli marinated ‘pork’; Baja To-fish Taco, with pickled red cabbage, salsa verde and chipotle chilli oil; Buffalo Cauliflower Taco with blue ‘cheese’, celery leaves and chilli threads; and the ‘Chorizo’ and Potato Taco, with pico de gallo. Meriel and her team make fresh tacos every day, working around the clock, milling and hand pressing their own from masa flour dough.
Also featured are the Club Mexicana signatures; BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Tacos; Jalepeno Poppers stuffed with chipotle cashew ‘cheese’; and Sikil Pak Hurache – a crispy masa pancake topped with pumkpin seeds puree and jackfruit tinga.
Meriel says, ‘Our food is all about flavour which packs a punch, but with a sprinkling of 80s kitsch to sweeten the blow. 2017 is going to be massive for vegan food, and we’re thrilled to be teaming up with Pamela, who’ve proven themselves to be trailblazers to champion a 100% vegan menu”
Club Mexicana’s new home, Pamela, opened in Haggerston in 2015 following a summer pop-up at the site by owners Deano Jo (The Alibi, Rita’s, Real Gold) and Martin Thomas (Birthdays, The Old Blue Last, The Windsor Castle). An ode to all the great Pamelas, from Anderson to Grier, the bar is focused on infused spirits, updated classics and continues Deano and Martin’s mission to create fun, informal spaces. Aside from the various Pamela portraits on the walls, the room is minimally styled with pared-down low hanging lamps and a copper top bar.
