At a time of uncertainty in the tourism industry, a photography competition aiming to highlight the beauty of Britain will make you look at staycations in a different light.
The winner of the 2016 Through the Lens Photography Awards was announced yesterday evening, and the 12 finalist photos will make you want to book your 2017 holiday in Britain.
The competition attracted over 3,500 entries from photographers wanting to highlight every region of the UK. From the idyllic countryside to gothic architecture, dramatic coastlines to the everyday lives of people living here, there is something to be said about the beauty of Britain.
Winning shots
The overall winner of the competition was Brian McCready who won the top prize of £5,000 worth of photography equipment. The photographer, who specialises in the Mourne Mountains, captured the winning shot on the summit of Slieve Corragh in Northern Ireland.
Ian Gazzard, the judge for Northern Ireland, commented the photo showed a “Wonderful moment of dramatic light translated honestly in processing, creating a fascinating engaging sense of location”. Earlier in the week, Millennium Hotels and Resorts announced the winner of the People’s Choice category. The public had a chance to vote for their favourite runner-up photo that didn’t quite make the final 12.
The photo with the most votes was also taken in Northern Ireland. Chris Ibbotson took the photo on the Portrush beach, highlighting the scenic Northern Irish coastline that captures the beauty of Britain.
Nayan Peshkar – SVP. Digital, Distribution & Revenue Strategy at Millennium Hotels and Resorts at Millennium Hotels and Resorts commented: “With 21 hotels across the UK, we’re passionate about constantly discovering new and interesting sides of this vibrant country, which is why we wanted to give photographers a chance to showcase our beautiful Britain. We’re delighted that the competition has captured the public’s imagination and with the tremendous standard of the entries.”
