The Black Cap Celebrates Enduring Legacy Following Denise Welch Tribute And Renewed Cultural Spotlight

June 8, 2026

The Black Cap in Camden has welcomed renewed recognition of its extraordinary cultural legacy, following Denise Welch’s emotional tribute to her late father during a standout performance at Mighty Hoopla.

During her set, Welch spoke about her father, Vin, a lifelong performer with a love of drag, recalling how she was introduced to London’s LGBTQ+ cabaret scene at a young age – including visits to The Black Cap, one of the capital’s most historic venues for drag and live performance.

Her remarks, widely reported across national media, underline the venue’s long-standing place not only in entertainment history, but in the personal stories of performers, allies and audiences who have passed through its doors over generations.

Rafa Motycki, manager at The Black Cap, said: “Hearing Denise speak so fondly about her father’s connection to performance, and her memories of The Black Cap, is incredibly moving. It reinforces what this venue has always been about – a home for expression, individuality and joy.

“Since reopening, it has been hailed a success and is quickly becoming the go-to venue once again, attracting an exciting mix of established names and emerging talent who want to be part of that legacy.

“We have had a number of performers including Baga Chips, Danny Beard, Victoria Scone, Me the Drag Queen, Sophia Stardust, Kiki Snatch, Honey Foxx, Pixie Polite, Louis Cyfer (drag king), Mocha, Asttina Mandella and many more.”

For decades, The Black Cap has been regarded as one of the UK’s most iconic LGBTQ+ venues – known affectionately as the “Palladium of Drag”.

From the 1960s onwards, it became a vital space for queer expression and performance, long before wider social acceptance, hosting generations of pioneering artists and providing a safe, welcoming environment for the community.

Among its most famous alumni are Paul O’Grady’s Lily Savage, who made her debut at the venue, and the legendary Regina Fong, whose performances drew loyal crowds and left a lasting mark on Camden’s nightlife.

The Black Cap’s influence has continued well beyond its stage. Artists across music and culture have spoken about its importance to London’s creative scene, including La Roux, who has publicly highlighted the venue in interviews as a touchstone of the capital’s alternative and queer nightlife heritage.

Since reopening in March 2026 after more than a decade, The Black Cap has re-established itself as a vibrant hub of cabaret, drag and community, blending its deep-rooted history with a forward-looking programme of live entertainment.

Its revival has been driven not only by investment, but by the passion of campaigners, performers and audiences who fought to preserve the venue as a cultural landmark.

Today, with a packed programme of shows and growing national attention, The Black Cap is once again attracting performers inspired by its heritage – echoing the same spirit that influenced generations before them, from Denise Welch’s father to today’s rising stars.

The recent spotlight generated by Welch’s tribute serves as a timely reminder of The Black Cap’s unique place in British cultural life – where personal stories, performance history and community identity meet.

As the venue continues its next chapter, it remains committed to providing a platform for bold, inclusive and boundary-pushing entertainment, ensuring its legacy as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ culture endures for generations to come.
