New Course and Putting Green Open at Matfen Hall

June 30, 2026

Matfen Hall has welcomed the first players to its new 18-hole championship golf course and putting green.

The launch marks the first stage of a multi-million-pound redevelopment at the Northumberland country hotel, spa and golf estate.

Sunshine and warm weather greeted club members and guests at the weekend as the first phase of the project opened at the five-star country estate.

Following several months of work, The Douglas at Matfen Hall has been created as the estate’s new championship course, combining nine newly designed greens with the classic character of its original layout.

As part of a full overhaul of its golf facilities, Matfen Hall has created eight new greens on its former Douglas course, along with one new green on its Standing Stone course, before merging the two.

The result is The Douglas at Matfen Hall, a course featuring dry stone walls, natural water obstacles, the River Pont and Northumberland countryside.

The estate’s other course, the nine-hole Dewlaw, remains unchanged.

Also now open to visitors is The Himalayas, Matfen Hall’s 18-hole putting course.

Located close to the country house, The Himalayas has been designed for guests of all ages and is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced players.

The launch of The Himalayas and The Douglas at Matfen Hall marks the first major milestone in the full refurbishment of the estate’s golf facilities.

Later this summer, The Academy will open, featuring a 15-bay driving range with Toptracer technology and a Power Tee system, alongside an all-weather 18-hole putting course.

The new facility is expected to set a new standard for golf in the region.

James Huntly, Head of Marketing at Matfen Hall country hotel, spa and golf estate, said: “What a fantastic opening weekend – we had wonderful weather and a great mix of guests and visitors across the two days.

“On Saturday, we opened with The Douglas’ first invitational which was very popular and then on Sunday, we had a bit of family fun as The Himalayas welcomed its first guests.

“Both are now fully open and we’ve now just got a bit more work to complete before we can open The Academy and the rest of the estate. We expect this to be ready within a couple of months and to be welcoming our first guests before the summer is out.”

The investment strengthens Matfen Hall’s position as a luxury destination for golf, leisure and staycation guests, while adding further momentum to Northumberland’s hospitality and tourism offer.
