Hackney Wick’s sustainability-forward floating restaurant Barge East has announced the appointment of Gavin Gordon as their new Executive Chef. Gordon will head up the culinary direction for the on-board 120-cover Barge East restaurant as well as their on-shore al-fresco casual dining destination ‘Barge East Gardens’.
East London native, Gordon trained at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant in London, before working as Head Chef at Gordon Ramsay’s The Narrow, as well as famed seafood Isle of White restaurant The Hut, and The Garrison, where he won and retained a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Gordon said of his appointment: “Joining the Barge East team was an easy career decision to make. The passion founders Tommo and Blandy have for the project is contagious, and their ethos of putting sustainability and seasonality at the forefront of their offering is one I’ve shared throughout my career – the menus I’ve developed for the restaurant and garden are all about exactly this. We’ll be working with some incredible local suppliers and businesses, so as a local Stratford boy, It’s an opportunity to give back a bit and really be immersed in the fabric of this East-London community.”
Gordon’s new Barge East restaurant Spring menu will keep in step with Barge East’s ethos of sustainability and seasonality, taking a ‘nose to tail’ approach to produce, with trim, offcuts & waste products all creatively used throughout the menu, as well as a focus on using locally sourced, ethical and sustainable produce. Plates include ‘homemade sourdough with wild garlic’, ‘British Asparagus, Dandelion, Chive Oil Dressing’, ‘Aged Beef Tartare, Smoked Marrow Croquette, Stilton, Focaccia Crumb’, and ‘British Market Fish Over Coals, Bouillabaisse Sauce, Samphire’, and diners can also choose from their weekly changing, ultra-sustainable specials chalkboard.
Barge East opened in 2018, after co-founders Tommo, Ryan, and Blandy sailed a 125 year-old Dutch barge across the North Sea, before making its home on the River Lee canal as a sustainability focused restaurant centred around high-quality, modern British dishes.
