The Government’s recent strategy to leak information prior to official announcements seems to be continuing today.
Jason Groves, Political Editor of the Daily Mail earlier today tweeted: “Ministers keen to get the morale-boosting Xmas plan out tonight ahead of more Covid gloom this week. One Whitehall source tells me it’s ‘entirely possible there will be no-one in Tier One’ when the allocations are made on Thursday.”
The name of the Whitehall source of course was withheld, but the tactic is in keeping with how the Government has of late regularly leaked information in relation to Covid-19.
The opening line – “Ministers keen to get the morale-boosting Xmas plan out tonight ahead of more Covid gloom this week.” – Assumes that the second line – “One Whitehall source tells me it’s ‘entirely possible there will be no-one in Tier One’ when the allocations are made on Thursday.” – is somehow good news, or will be read as such.
If this is a leak of correct information, and doubtless more will subsequently follow before tomorrow’s official announcement, it is a disaster for hospitality businesses across England.
With Christmas Day this time next month, any hope of recouping profitable trade in the run up to it is dashed.
