Following its opening in June, Bethnal Green local Coupette is launching its brunch menu this month. Emulating the distinct French accent of the bar’s cocktail and drinks menus, the brunch will provide a selection of classic brunch fare with a French twist.
Served from 11am on weekends, diners can look forward to a relaxed morning in the venue’s laid-back surroundings, sampling dishes such as; the ‘Full French Breakfast’, a combination of local sausages, poached eggs, spiced tomatoes, potato rosti, roasted mushrooms and toast; ‘Truffle Scrambled Eggs’, served on French loaf; ‘Bacon Sandwich’ with tomato jam & Lyonnaise onions; or the ‘Croque aux Salmon’, a mix of salmon confit and truffled leeks served as a croque monsieur or croque madame. Other croque filling options include the classic ham hock & gruyere cheese, roasted mushrooms with Lyonnaise onions or Merguez sausage.
Created by Head Chef James Allen Thompson, the brunch menu perfectly complements Coupette’s drinks menu, which utilises lesser-known ingredients such as calvados, cidre and poiré. Signature cocktails include; ‘Apples’, in which Calvados is mixed with cold-pressed apple juice that is carbonated in-house daily, a ‘Truffled White Negroni’, made with truffles in season at the time, and the ‘Champagne Pina Colada’, a modern take on the classic.
For those dropping by earlier in the week, there is a more extensive food menu served at lunchtime and in the evenings, featuring a selection of small and larger plates made from the best seasonal ingredients on offer. Smaller plates include a variety of croque monsieurs, Pissaladière topped with olives, confit tomato & shaved fennel and summery salads such as baby beetroots with honey-glazed carrots & goats curd and avocado & watermelon with goat’s cheese, leaves & pickled onions. Larger dishes on the launch menu include braised lamb shoulder and smoked eel and to finish up the meal there is a sweet section comprising of chocolate mousse with orange granita & hazelnut, melon with champagne sorbet and ice cream Coupette, served with liqueur. There is also a range of sharing plates and snacks on offer, with the changing menu featuring the likes of charcuterie, cheese and warm truffle gougeres.
Founded by former head bartender of the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy Hotel, Chris Moore, Coupette recently joined Bethnal Green’s roster of acclaimed drinking spots. This newcomer offers a cocktail menu inspired by Moore’s passion for exploring the history of cocktails and less well-known ingredients. His in-depth knowledge of French culture and products informs the selection of drinks on offer, including Calvados specially selected from the Pays d’Auge and Domfrontais regions and Coupette’s very own CBGB (Coupette Black Grape Bitters) and original French Amer, created in collaboration with artisan producers The Bloomsbury Distillery.
Coupette is a modern neighbourhood bar, combining the chance for cocktail connoisseurs to savour and discover something totally new and a hangout for locals just looking for a quick coupette – meaning a ‘cheeky one’ in French
