“Investing in eco-friendly products and activities has never been easier and comes with endless benefits” says Michael Kupneski, from P&G Professional Research & Development
At a time when guests are on the lookout for ‘green’ hospitality establishments, every business can take easy steps to be more environmentally friendly. With a number of options available, it’s never been easier to be eco-friendly. The green transformation starts with the products managers choose to use every day, the way they operate their business and how they train and educate staff.
Switching to sustainable products and activities can be simple and comes with endless benefits:
- ‘Green’ begins with clean – Cleaning your dishes and glassware right the first time can ensure you use fewer products and less man-power, so you can realize real cost savings and be ‘green’ simply by choosing the right suppliers. Look for producers that make sustainability a priority, it will help your own business be eco-friendly
- Eliminating phosphates – While phosphates can help prevent dishes from spotting in the wash cycle, they have sometimes been found in lakes and reservoirs. Phosphates have been found to stimulate algae growth, which can deprive other plants and fish of oxygen. Using phosphate-free products formulated to prevent spotting with other ingredients can be the start of your sustainable journey. Additionally, using capsules that can get the job done right the first time, even without the use of phosphates, has the potential to save 21 billion liters of water annually
- Train cleaning staff properly – Achieving employee buy-in is important as labour accounts for up to 85 percent of operational costs. Housekeeping staff need to be taught to clean efficiently by using the right amount of product to get the job done, not less (which could create rework) and not more (which causes waste). Continued education of staff on how to clean effectively is a must, as well as reminders and being available for questions. Even the most sustainable cleaning products, if used incorrectly, will not clean effectively.
It’s easier than you think to implement changes that can help boost your facility’s sustainability efforts. Remember, you can start with small changes that can add up over time and feel good about the positive impact your changes can make.
