H&C News regularly meets with suppliers to keep up to date with the latest product and service innovations, aiming to get the inside track on what companies offer to the market and how it is delivered.
This week, we met with Mark Powell, MD of Ozone Clean at their offices in London to gain a better understanding of the business.
Ozone Clean provides pioneering cleaning equipment that swiftly and effectively removes odours from enclosed furnished spaces.
When and how did Ozone Clean start?
The company was founded in 2005 by Dr. Arnold Powell due to an issue that was severely impacting his family business. Dr. Powell runs four private care homes under the Springdene banner that accommodate many residents suffering from dementia. They were encountering ‘urine, or worse’ accidents on the furnishings that were amounting to substantial financial and operational problems for the company.
Dr. Powell had heard of a revolutionary cleaning process using ozone that was being deployed in the food processing and distribution industry and so we imported a unit for testing. After extremely successful field trials, we researched the market and discovered this technique provided a far superior service to other deep cleaning solutions for care homes and the hospitality industry.
Our research indicated that speed as well as safety needed to be addressed. Ozone Clean was established and we began to develop more enhanced units that could be easily operated by cleaning staff and required minimal training. We also wanted the unit to function in a much faster and safer manner as well as produce and destroy ozone in one cycle
Once we perfected the technology and launched our products, we started to promote them to the hospitality sector as Ozone Clean presents an ideal solution for those that require a fast turnaround of rooms. Other clients include medical facilities, cruise liners and properties requiring fire and flood restoration.
How does your product work and what are the main benefits?
Ozone is activated oxygen, a normal occurrence in the environment that works as a natural cleaner. When it comes into contact with an odour (a volatile organic compound), a chemical reaction takes place and the smell oxidises into a harmless, non-odourous substance.
Unlike air fresheners, ozone permanently removes unpleasant smells caused by damp, food preparation, vomit and smoking in furnishings and fabrics. It also works as a natural sanitizing agent, killing most bacteria, pathogens and viruses including E-Coli and MRSA, leaving treated areas hygienically clean as well as smelling fresh.
Typically, housekeepers have traditionally relied on a mix of chemical cleaners and equipment such as chemical defogging and carpet cleaning machines. Ozone Clean’s equipment eliminates the need for deep cleaning rooms, enabling much faster turnaround times, overall cost savings and substantially increased efficiency of the hotel’s cleaning staff. Rooms are brought back into service in fifteen minutes.
Our products are also very eco-friendly as they reduce the usage of air fresheners and eliminate the need for steam cleaners and shampoo machines. Last year, we won the Green Apple Environment Award from an initiative that recognizes Britain’s greenest companies.
How do hoteliers / restaurant owners start the process of choosing Ozone Clean? How do they select which product is best for them?
Hoteliers and restaurant owners interested in Ozone Clean should contact us to arrange a free demonstration of the products that usually takes place on their site. We have two primary units, the OC700 and the more powerful OC1500. If a hotel is very busy and incurs high occupancy rates, the OC1500 would be the most beneficial as this takes just 15 minutes to remove an odour from a room. The OC700 is better suited to hotels with slower turnaround times – it is just as efficient and is much more cost effective, taking around 30 minutes to eliminate a bad odour.
Where is the business going? What new products are you launching?
Alongside supplying hotels and care homes in the UK, we’re seeking distribution overseas for the hospitality sector plus we will continue to target other sectors as mentioned above. We’re also aiming to launch new products for applications in larger public spaces.
In the coming months, we’ll be introducing a new, enhanced version of the OC1500 which is smaller, lighter, easier to use and self-servicing. Superior in performance, the unit conducts an extremely powerful five-minute cycle, ten minutes faster than our current product.
