Tanguy Martin of Hotel TerraVina took home the coveted Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Sommelier of the Year title after a fiercely fought Final earlier this month. Martin was presented with his award at the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Annual Awards’ dinner held last night at The Dorchester Hotel, London and will now represent his country in the International Finals, Copenhagen which take place in Autumn 2014.
Martin beat off three admirable competitors at the Gaggenau Showroom, London, in a series of challenges designed to test each contestant’s technical knowledge and service ability. Romain Bourger, The Vineyard, came a close second, whilst Antonino Camilleri, Medlar and Pierre Brunelli, The Fat Duck, took joint third place.
The competition was broken down into three parts: theory, service and blind tasting. Finalists had to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in an hour-long written test on wine and production, a practical exhibition of service skills and finally a blind taste assessment of six wines.
Philip Evins, Bailli Délégué for the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs commented on the 2014 competition saying:
“Year on year we see such a high standard of competitors but this year has truly set the bar high for 2015. With four finalists it was an extremely hard decision for the judges to make as each competitor demonstrated real passion, ability and knowledge.
“We have no doubt that all four will continue on to achieve great success and wish Tanguy all the best in the International Finals later in the year.”
Martin will have a tough act to follow in the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs International Finals, which take place in Copehagen this September, after last year’s UK Young Sommelier of the Year winner, Loic Avrill went on to become international champion.
