The Library
The hotel’s library is itself steeped in history as the original member’s library. Bookcases made of English oak support the busts of writers and classical figures including Shakespeare, Milton, Agrippa, and Plato. The fireplace at the south end of the room hosts a carving by A.H. Wilkinson (1922) of ‘The truth reading aloud’ which depicts the plumed helmet of Minerva, ‘Goddess of the Arts’. Behind it is situated the original librarian’s office with a very narrow oak spiral staircase leading to the gallery above. The books housed in the Library today are mainly reference books covering topics from street lighting codes of 1929 to the compendium of organoleptic compounds!
