Little Britain star David Walliams has been feasting on Britain’s biggest dish at one of the country’s top fish and chip restaurants.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge, best-selling children’s writer and charity champ sat down for fish, chips and a side of mushy peas at Colmans of South Shields last Friday.
He was in the Tyneside town to take part in the annual South Shields Lecture, organised by Labour MP David Miliband.
Mr Miliband always takes his guests to Colmans – his own favourite restaurant – and they always leave with a full stomach and a smile on their face.
Past guests have included Hollywood actor Patrick Stewart, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, comedian Jo Brand and best-selling author Bill Bryson.
Owner Richard Ord said: “Once again it was lovely to play host to Mr Miliband’s guest. We always feel very privileged that he chooses to come to our restaurant.
“Over the years we have certainly had some massive names through our door and while it’s great for us to meet those people it’s even better to see an empty plate and someone full of praise for what we do.
“David Walliams was no different. He is a big fan of fish and chips and enjoyed what he had. He is a very charming and lovely guy.”
Colmans, which is situated in Ocean Road in the seaside town of South Shields, has also seen many other famous faces try their grub including film producer Lord David Puttnam, Loose Women host Denise Welch, Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall, politician Lord Peter Mandelson, former Olympic medallist and founder of the Great North Run Brendan Foster, Gavin and Stacey star Alison Steadman, Auf Wiedersehen Pet’s Tim Healy, Coronation Street’s Liz Dawn, TV personality Keith Chegwin, and many chefs and food critics.
Walliams took to his Twitter account later to declare how much he had enjoyed his visit to the North East, saying: “Huge thanks to @DMiliband for inviting me to his constituency. I had the best day & the warmest welcome from the people of South Shields. x”
He then Tweeted a picture of him and Mr Miliband in the restaurant.
Mr Miliband wrote: “Major league thanks to staff @ColmansSeaFood for amazing fish and chips tonight”, on his own account.
