Like 113,000 others H&C News follows celebrated Pastry Chef Thomas Leatherbarrow on Twitter, so when Thomas confirmed his taking part in HandCSocial 2016 we were more than a tad pleased. Thomas and the other delegates at #HandCSocial 2016 will be discussing if how many followers a person, brand or business has is also a measure of how engaging they are, amongst other things on the day.
So it was interesting when we met with Thomas recently to hear some of his reasons for his wanting to take part.
Thomas pictured at the H&C News Charity Summer PartyThomas explained, ‘social media has helped me in many ways over recent years and most of all in opening communications with valuable business contacts all over the world. There are many great things about being a chef and on social media one of them is that images of your product can do a lot of the talking for you.
Like anything social media does take a lot of work to get it right and we all have to start from zero. But over time you can build up a solid following of people that like what you like, and talk your talk, these are in many instances potential future customers. A message crafted in the right tone and an eye catching image can initiate communication, but that then needs to be developed.
I have spent a lot of time on Twitter and other social channels and I take the same approach to social media as I do to being a chef, work hard and the results will come. It takes time, application and lots of hard work and despite what some try to tell you, is certainly not a piece of cake.
I am looking forward to hearing from others attending #HandCSocial 2016 and learning from their shared experiences.’

The discussion theme is – Engagement and Numbers, the Conundrum – the number of followers/likes a person, business or brand has on any social media channel is not always also a measure of how engaging someone may find it. So delegates will reflect on how they evaluate the people, brands and businesses they engage with, as well as why and how they do it to best effect.
Please outline how you feel you would contribute to these discussions in the form below, two people will be notified on 14 September and invited to attend.
