Former US president Bill Clinton returned to Ireland last Saturday ahead of meeting the former Irish Taoiseach and the former and present Prime Ministers of the UK, Tony Blair, and Rishi Sunak this week at a three-day conference on the future of Northern Ireland.
Following President Joe Biden’s much celebrated visit to Ireland last week, Bill Clinton will look to add further hope to restoring an active government within the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Also due in Belfast at the future of Northern Ireland conference hosted by Queen’s University are the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, and a raft of senior White House representatives.

Former US President Bill Clinton was welcomed back to the Europa Hotel on Saturday where he met with many of the people who work with the hotel, including Head Concierge Martin Mulholland, who he first met when he stayed with his wife Hilary in 1995 and then again in 1998.
Greeting the Europa Hotel’s General Manager, Andy McNeill, President Clinton said: “I’m so glad to be back.”
Speaking of President Clinton’s third visit to the hotel General Manager, Andy McNeill commented: “We were thrilled to welcome President Clinton back to the Europa Hotel.”
The attendees taking part in the conference include former US senator George Mitchell, chair of the Good Friday peace talks 25 years ago, Lord Empey, one of the key Ulster Unionist party participants in the negotiations, and former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams.
Mark Durkan, the former leader of the Social Democratic and Labour party, and Monica McWilliams, co-founder of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition will address the conference.
Prominent unionists are also scheduled to speak including Doug Beattie, head of the Ulster Unionist party, DUP MP Ian Paisley, and Dawn Purvis, former leader of the Progressive Unionist Party.
