MP’s accusations of Government lying about Covid condoned by Michael Gove

January 28, 2021

Covid-19 statistics are being manipulated and lied about by government to overstate the gravity of the ongoing pandemic according to Conservative MP Sir Desmond Swayne.

And Swayne doesn’t stop there, he also supports anti vaccination groups and their efforts to dissuade people from being vaccinated.

The Conservative MP’s claims are not only noxious and endangering lives, but they are also at complete odds with government policy and messaging, undermining the government.

Hospitality businesses and many others hoping to reopen are wholly dependent upon a successful vaccination roll out in the months ahead. The views of Swayne stifle that process and give license to other conspiracy theorists to slow the process further.

The Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove appeared on Sky News this morning and seems to lack any appreciation of the scope and scale of damage done by Swayne. Or sticking with your mates is simply a higher priority for the witless Gove.

Sky News host Niall Paterson interviewing Gove asks: “He (Swayne) suggests that capacity figures within the health service, NHS, are being manipulated. He is accusing the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Scientific Advisor, the legions of people who work in the Cabinet Office (Gove’s office), and elsewhere in Whitehall, the people who put this data together, he’s accusing them of lying.” Gove replies: “Well he’s wrong, and he should say sorry.”

The question and Gove’s dismissal of it beyond an apology being required shows no comprehension of the damage done. The interview can be seen and heard in the video clip embedded in the Sky News tweet below.

“I’m sure that he will be very clear that it was a serious mistake and an apology will be forthcoming,” says Michael Gove – when asked if Sir Desmond Swayne should have the whip withdrawn for claiming NHS stats were manipulated.

Hospitality is reliant upon urgent action being taken by government to combat Covid-19 enabling livelihoods dependent on that action to resume.

While people like Swayne remain on a seat in Parliament and Gove in the Cabinet, sorry, running the Cabinet, hospitality’s wait will be far longer than necessary.
