The Prime Minister interviewed by Andrew Marr on Sunday maintained his confident tone reiterating his prediction that the Covid situation would be better by the spring. He also said that he ‘hoped’ tens of millions of people would be vaccinated in the next three months.
The confident statements made by Prime Minister Johnson were not backed up however with him sharing any details of why so, on either a reduced impact from Covid or how millions of vaccinations would be achieved.
The PM did warn of tougher restrictions on the way, he told Marr: “It may be that we need to do things in the next few weeks that will be tougher in many parts of the country. I’m fully, fully reconciled to that. And I bet the people of this country are reconciled to that because, until the vaccine really comes on stream in a massive way, we’re fighting this virus with the same set of tools.”
Johnson’s optimism and his statements would seem to contradict each other, or maybe he’s falling back on his habit of sugar coating.
Later in the day labour leader Sir Keir Starmer wasn’t sugar coating anything claiming that the Prime Minister was only stalling the inevitable. Starmer called for total lockdown across England within 24 hours.
What neither of them called for is more economic support, which for the hospitality industry is now, more than ever in 2020, vital.
Hospitality throughout 2020 took the brunt of the Covid pandemic and enters 2021 severely battered and bruised.
Throughout 2020 we called on the Government for more support to the hospitality industry that is facing a catastrophic loss of businesses.
The intervention by Government in 2020 was substantial and helped many survive through 2020, without much more, and very soon, a tipping point will be reached seeing an unstoppable avalanche of business failures.
